It is a great honor and privilege to host the 58th Annual Meeting of the Japan Society for Medical Education in Toyama in 2026. We are delighted to welcome this long-standing academic gathering to our region, and we look forward to warmly welcoming all of you to Toyama.

The theme of this year’s meeting is:
“Beyond Your Boundaries and Expectations”

Medical education today requires a broader perspective—one that extends beyond the traditional role of training physicians to encompass the health and well-being of society as a whole. From climate change and pandemics to the rapid development of AI and ICT, and the growing diversity of patient needs, the challenges we face are increasingly complex and cannot be addressed solely within the confines of conventional healthcare.

This is precisely why we believe medical education must transcend existing boundaries—of disciplines, systems, and values—and embrace new perspectives with openness and creativity. While maintaining a foundation of medical expertise, we seek to foster interdisciplinary learning by engaging with fields such as sociology, constitutional studies, business administration, linguistics, and communication studies. It is in these unexpected intersections that new forms of learning and innovation are born.

Historically known as “Koshi-no-kuni” or the “Land of Kōshi,” Toyama has long symbolized the aspiration to “go beyond”—to surpass one’s current self with ambition and courage. A place where nature and industry, tradition and innovation, and urban and rural life coexist harmoniously, Toyama offers a rich environment for meaningful exchange. Here, we hope participants from diverse backgrounds and perspectives will come together to envision the future of medical education.

In addition to keynote and invited lectures, the program will feature interdisciplinary workshops, interactive sessions, and initiatives designed for students and early-career participants. Our goal is to create a vibrant forum that inspires all attendees to push beyond conventional limits and discover learning opportunities that exceed even their own expectations.

We sincerely look forward to engaging in passionate discussions and forward-looking dialogues with all of you in Toyama.

Warmest regards.
