Michihiro Ueda
Chair of the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Oral Oncology
Department of Oral Oncology Surgery, NHO Hokkaido Cancer Center

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, I am delighted to invite you to the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Oral Oncology that will take place in Sapporo from January 25th (Thu) to 26 (Fri), 2024. We held the meetings online three times, including the previous one, due to the spread of COVID-19. Since the 38th Meeting, organized by Prof. Ota, the 42nd Meeting will be held face-to-face for the first time in four years. As a measure against coronavirus, live and video-on-demand streaming has become more popular than ever, making it easier to participate in meetings and watch programs anytime. At the 42nd Meeting, most sessions will be held in person; video-on-demand streaming is also available.
With the remarkable development of medical technology, various technological innovations occurred. Those developments embraced flourishing basic research, leading to numerous translational studies, which enabled many therapeutic methods for clinical use.
From a surgical treatment point of view, minimally invasive surgery has become possible through CAS (computer-assisted surgery) and various robot surgeries using endoscopes. In the radiation therapy field, the development of multiple types of radiation materials and the spread of high-precision radiotherapy, such as IMRT, made it possible to accurately detect cancers and generalize treatment methods less invasive to normal tissues. Chemotherapy has advanced dramatically. Cytotoxic chemotherapy targeting specific genes developed from cell-killing many medicines have been approved for cancer treatment. In addition, immune checkpoint inhibitor has been developed based on elucidating the mechanism of immune surveillance and evasion of cancer cells, and their indications for various types of cancers are expanding. In addition, new photoimmunotherapy based on photodynamics has also come into use.
The theme of the 41st Meeting, “Development and Harmonization of Oral Oncology”, is partially based on World Exposition 1970 in Osaka. It was truly an era of technological innovation in which the first human landed on the moon. Today, medicine is also entering a new century of creative technological progress. At the 42nd Meeting, we hope you review these new treatments and discuss multidisciplinary treatments that harmonize them. We look forward to the participation of many of our members.
