Welcome Address

Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it gives us great pleasure to invite you to the International Symposium on Pharmacogenomics in Epilepsy to be held in Hirosaki, Japan in association with the 43rd Congress of the Japan Epilepsy Society.

Research on the Pharmacogenomics in Epilepsy has entered a period of mushrooming growth, and Hirosaki has the longest history of epilepsy research in Japan. For these reasons, we are convinced that this is a perfect time to be holding the first Symposium in Japan on Pharmacogenomics in Epilepsy in Hirosaki.

Much is to be gained from this gathering of leading doctors and scientists in this field to report new advances, to review processes, discuss conflicting findings and divergent interpretations on CYP and transporter genotypic-phenotypic responses, to discuss significant implications of polymorphisms in drug target sites, and lastly to make more meaningful plans for the future directions of research.

The selection of drug treatments for epilepsy is still based upon trial-error strategies. Pharmacogenomics tries to identify possible genetic determinants of clinical responses and can help to predict clinical outcome even before treatments are commenced. Though genetic information will never solve all of the puzzles facing us in this field, nothing will be clarified without it. Thus, we cannot overstress the need for fruitful collaboration among clinicians, clinical pharmacologists, and molecular biologists. This International Symposium will be a basis for the development of individualized medicine for epilepsy in the future.

Hirosaki is a small, traditional castle town with a relaxing park. Some call it "small Kyoto," in recognition of its many temples and very good Japanese gardens. Places to visit, when you come Hirosaki, include Mt Iwaki, Lake Towada, and of course the gardens.
The Organizing Committee looks forward to welcoming you to Hirosaki in 2009. We hope that you will benefit from the scientific program, share information and ideas with new acquaintances, and enjoy your stay in one of beautiful cities in Japan.

With warm regards,

Sunao Kaneko MD., PhD
